In order to speed up the decision making powers of top military leadership, India’s ministry of defence Thursday enhanced the financial decision making powers of deputy services chiefs by five times.

This substantially enhanced financial powers are given to all three vice chiefs of Indian Army, Air Force and Navy for revenue procurement.

However, there is a ceiling of spending up to Rs. 500 crore.

Indian military leadership has historically suffered bureaucratic red-tapism and inertia in short term and urgent defence procurement for decades.

These historically curtailed financial powers of senior military leaders have often hampered swift and effective response to adversaries.

India’s first full time women defence minister, Nirmala Sitharaman approved the decision to augment the arms and ammunition reserves of the Armed Forces to enhance their operational preparedness.

Ministry of Defence said: “This is likely to give another fillip to the capacity of the three Armed Forces.”
