India Defence News: In a major success in the direction of complete indigenisation of Brahmos supersonic cruise missile, DRDO and Brahmos Aerospace successfully testfired the missile with the propulsion system, airframe, power supply and other major components developed in India.
The missile was successfully test-fired at around 10.20 AM Monday morning from the integrated test range (ITR) Chandipur in Odisha for its full range of 290 kilometeres.
“With this successful mission, the indigenous content in the formidable weapon has reached a high value, thus bolstering India’s defence indigenisation and the flagship ‘Make in India’ programme,” said the ministry of defence in a statement.
Brahmos Missile has been jointly developed by India and Russia and forms the main attack platform for all three services of Indian military.
The highly maneuverable missile has already been tested from Sukhoi 30 MKI and Indian Navy ships in addition to its land version.
It is already in service of Indian Air Force, Indian Army and Indian Navy but the DRDO has been working towards greater indigenization of the supersonic cruise missile jointly developed with Russian help.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, BrahMos and defence manufacturers for the successful test-firing of the missile with indigenously developed systems.
Secretary, Department of Defence, R&D and Chairman DRDO, Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy and DG, Missiles and Strategic Systems MSR Prasad also congratulated the scientists and industry participants for the successful launch.
DG (BrahMos) Dr Sudhir Kumar Mishra, Director DRDL Dr Dashrath Ram and Dr BK Das Director ITR coordinated and witnessed the entire mission at the launch site.
After carefully validating the test results of Brahmos missile with Indian propulsion system and other indigenously developed systems, these two scientitsts termed the test successful. It’s a major boost to Make in India programme.
