India’s Tata Group begins work on new defence factory

Defence News India: One of India’s largest conglomerates Tata Group Friday held ground breaking ceremony for a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility near Hyderabad in Telangana. This new defence electronics facility belongs to Nova Integrated Systems Ltd (NISL), a subsidiary of Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), that has joint-ventures with world’s leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Lockheed Martin, Sikorsky, Boeing and GE.

The new facility, which is being established at Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Limited’s (TSIIC), Industrial Park near Hyderabad, will serve as a hub for design, development and production of the state-of-the-art defence electronics systems such as command posts, combat management systems, radars and electro-optic products.

The company aims to complete the first phase in next 6-8 months.

“The setting up of the advanced defence design and development infrastructure is an important milestone for TASL,” said Sukaran Singh, CEO & MD of Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL).

“This reaffirms our commitment towards developing defence technology, creating jobs and enhancing capabilities in this sector,” said Sukaran Singh of TASL.

Nova Integrated Systems Limited (NISL) offers customised defence electronic system solutions to the Indian Armed Forces, DRDO, international OEMs and system integrators.

The defence projects of NISL include mobile command and controls for Indian Army, mobile VSAT communication shelter, radar and microwave component manufacturing, electro optics and electronics manufacturing and R&D and prototyping facilities. This will create direct employment to 600 people and help the local defence supply chain to grow.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of NISL, Telangana IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao acknowledged TATA group’s contribution in bringing top global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Sikorsky, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and GE Aviation to Hyderabad.

He said the projects have been instrumental in making Hyderabad a preferred destination for global OEMs for Make in India aerospace and defence.

“We also have a strong private sector defence industry comprising of 25 large companies and over 1,000 MSMEs catering to defence and aerospace sector,” said KT Rama Rao.
