Indian Navy to focus more on indigenous equipment in its repair and refit work

Defence News India: Indian Navy has decided to lay more emphasis on indigenisation in its repair and refit work under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship Make in India in Defence scheme. Addressing the Indian Navy’s Annual Refit Conference, Vice Admiral GS Pabby urged the naval officers to focus more on greater indigenisation of their refit and repair plans. He said it will be in line with the Government’s flagship Make in India scheme.

The conference conducted a comprehensive review of refit plans for all ships and submarines of the Indian Navy. It also discussed the plan for infrastructure augmentation to meet the growing requirements of the Indian Navy.

Vice Admiral GS Pabby, who is also Chief of Materiel (COM) of Indian Navy, emphasised on the need to ensure quality refits of ships and submarines while maintaining the safety of personnel and material.

Indian Navy’s Annual Refit Conference (ARC) and Annual Infrastructure Conference (AIC) commenced at Headquarters Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday.

The two-day conference chaired by Vice Admiral GS Pabby Chief of Materiel, Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence(Navy) was attended by all the stakeholders representing the Naval Headquarters, three Naval Commands, the Tri-Services Andaman & Nicobar Command at Port Blair, Dockyards, Repair Yards and Material Organisations of the Navy.

In his inaugural address, Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain who is Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command appreciated the sustained effort by navy personnel in ensuring combat availability of Naval platforms.

He also lauded the role of the Naval Repair Yards in ensuring sustained operation of platforms at sea.

“During the course of the conference, technical and logistics aspects concerning refits were deliberated at length with a special emphasis on enhanced efficiency and capability of sea-going units,” defence ministry said in a statement.

Vice Admiral Pabby urged  the naval officer to focus more on greater indigenisation of their refit and repair plans. He said it will be in line with the Government’s flagship scheme – Make in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched Make in India scheme in September 2014 to increase the share of manufacturing in the country’s GDP to 25%.
