Defence Acquisition Council clears defence procurement worth Rs 21,772 crores: In a significant move to bolster India’s defense capabilities, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, approved a slew of capital acquisition proposals worth over INR 21,772 Crores ($2.56 billion) on Tuesday (December 3, 2024). These acquisitions are aimed at enhancing India’s naval, air, and land forces, particularly in areas of coastal security and surveillance.
Naval Powerhouse
The Indian Navy is set to receive a significant boost with the procurement of 31 New Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts (NWJFACs) and 120 Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC-1). These vessels are designed to perform a range of critical maritime operations, including:
Low-Intensity Maritime Operations: These operations involve countering threats like piracy, smuggling, and terrorism in coastal waters.
Surveillance and Patrol: Monitoring maritime borders and detecting potential threats.
Search and Rescue: Locating and rescuing individuals in distress at sea.
Anti-Piracy Missions: Combating piracy, especially in and around India’s island territories.
Escorting High-Value Units: Protecting vital assets like aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines.

Air Force Modernization
The Indian Air Force will receive a significant upgrade with the procurement of Electronic Warfare Suites (EWS) for its Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets. This advanced system will enhance the aircraft’s survivability by detecting and jamming enemy radars and missile systems. The EWS will also provide the pilots with real-time situational awareness, enabling them to take evasive maneuvers and launch counterattacks.

Coastal Security and Surveillance
The Indian Coast Guard will receive six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) M (MR) to strengthen its coastal security and surveillance capabilities. These helicopters are equipped with advanced sensors and weapons systems, making them ideal for maritime operations. They will be deployed to monitor India’s vast coastline, detect and intercept illegal activities, and conduct search and rescue missions.

Tank and Aircraft Overhaul
In addition to these new acquisitions, the DAC also approved the overhaul of T-72 and T-90 tanks, BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, and engines of Sukhoi fighter aircraft. This will extend the service life of these critical assets, ensuring their continued operational readiness.
