Norway boosts NASAMs with Kongsberg-Raytheon’s New Radar: Milan, Italy – Norway’s Ministry of Defence has announced a partnership with Raytheon and Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace to develop a new radar system designed to enhance the capabilities of the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS).

The next-generation sensor, based on Raytheon’s GhostEye radar family, will offer increased range and detection capabilities, enabling NASAMS to effectively engage a wider range of threats, including advanced cruise missiles, drones, and hypersonic weapons.

“We can’t provide specific performance details yet, but this new radar will significantly surpass the current NASAMS sensor configuration,” said Mike Mills, executive director of GhostEye programs at Raytheon. “The active electronically scanned array and gallium nitride technology will be key to delivering superior performance.”

The collaboration between Norway, Raytheon, and Kongsberg is a testament to the NASAMS system’s proven effectiveness and its potential for future growth. The three partners signed a Capabilities Collaborative Agreement in 2023, which outlines a roadmap for developing and integrating new technologies into the NASAMS system.

Norway has been a strong supporter of Ukraine’s defense efforts, having donated several NASAMS systems to the country. The development of the new radar system reflects Norway’s commitment to maintaining a strong and modern air defense capability while also supporting its allies.
