Saab and HAL Partner for Making Laser Warning Systems in India: NEW DELHI – Saab, a global defense and security company, has inked a deal with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to produce laser warning systems in India. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focuses on the Electronic Warfare land Laser Warning System-310 (LWS-310).

The agreement builds upon a longstanding partnership between Saab‘s South African division and HAL, which began in 2005 during the development of the Advanced Light Helicopter program. This new collaboration centers around a Maintenance Transfer of Technology, enabling HAL to manufacture the LWS-310 within India, aligning with the country’s Defence Procurement Procedure.

The MoU outlines provisions for establishing the necessary infrastructure, training programs, and the transfer of technical expertise from Saab to HAL, ensuring long-term support for the system. Saab emphasized its commitment to localization and indigenization in India through this partnership, highlighting the importance of utilizing an Indian company to guarantee a secure supply chain for the Indian armed forces.

“This MoU reflects Saab’s commitment to localisation and indigenisation in India by identifying and utilising an Indian company. This ensures the longevity of the security of supply in supporting the Indian armed forces,” said Mats Palmberg, chairman and managing director of Saab India.

The LWS-310 provides rapid threat warning and classification, integrating with combat management systems to deploy countermeasures against laser threats. This technology significantly enhances situational awareness and self-protection capabilities for combat vehicles.
