Rheinmetall Ammunition Factory Ukraine: Düsseldorf, Germany – German defense contractor Rheinmetall has secured a significant order from the Ukrainian government to establish an ammunition production facility within the country. The contract, valued in the low hundreds of millions of euros, marks a substantial step forward in the realization of plans announced earlier this year.
Rheinmetall will be responsible for the complete technical outfitting of the factory, including its commissioning. The company aims to begin construction shortly and anticipates completion within several years. Ammunition production is slated to commence within 24 months.
A joint venture between Rheinmetall and a Ukrainian state-owned enterprise will oversee the operation of the plant. This partnership was initially outlined at the Munich Security Conference in February.
The agreement comes on the heels of increased cooperation between the two nations. In June, Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger and Ukrainian Minister for Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin signed a deal to expand strategic collaboration at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin. Additionally, a joint venture, Rheinmetall Ukrainian Defence Industry LLC, recently opened an armor plant in western Ukraine.

Rheinmetall’s involvement in Ukraine extends beyond ammunition production. The company is set to deliver the first Lynx Infantry Fighting Vehicle to the Ukrainian armed forces before the end of the year, with plans for local production to follow.
Armin Papperger expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We are putting our words into action and together with our partner we will create a Ukrainian competence center for ammunition.” He added that the order underscores confidence in Rheinmetall’s expertise and manufacturing capabilities.
The new ammunition factory is seen as a crucial step in Ukraine’s reindustrialization efforts and strengthening its defense capabilities.
