Navantia begins AIP installation on S-83 submarine: Cartagena, Spain (October 31, 2023) – Navantia, the renowned Spanish shipbuilding company, has initiated the installation of Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) equipment onto the S-83 submarine at its shipyard in Cartagena. This groundbreaking technology is poised to elevate the S80 class submarines to the pinnacle of conventional submarine capabilities.
The AIP system, a world-first, harnesses the power of sustainable bioethanol to generate hydrogen. This innovative process, carried out by the Bioethanol Processing System, enables the submarine to store both hydrogen and oxygen on board. The stored gases are then combined within a fuel cell to produce electricity, significantly extending the submarine’s submerged endurance to two to three times that of conventional submarines.
This extended underwater endurance, coupled with reduced acoustic and magnetic signatures, dramatically enhances the submarine’s stealth capabilities.

Navantia’s S80 Submarine
The S80 class submarines are highly automated vessels, requiring a relatively small crew of 32 sailors to operate. The state-of-the-art platform control system, developed by Navantia Sistemas, enables efficient operation and maintenance. With a top underwater speed exceeding 19 knots and a maximum depth capacity of over 300 meters, these submarines are designed to excel in a wide range of missions.
S80’s Combat System developed by Navantia Sistemas & Lockheed Martin
A notable feature of the S80 class is its advanced combat system, jointly developed by Navantia Sistemas and Lockheed Martin. This system grants the submarine the unique capability, among NATO and EU conventional submarines of similar size, to launch land-attack tactical missiles. This strategic capability significantly expands the submarine’s operational role and enhances its overall combat effectiveness.
As the only 3,000-ton submarines worldwide to feature this cutting-edge technology, the S80 class submarines are primed to redefine the standards of stealth, endurance, and operational flexibility. Coupled with a meticulous design and production process focused on near-invisibility, these submarines open up exciting export opportunities, strengthening Navantia’s international presence and fostering collaboration within its extensive ecosystem.
