Navantia Installs AIP on S-80 Submarine: Cartagena (Spain), November 26th, 2024.- Navantia’s shipyard in Cartagena has achieved a significant milestone by completing the installation of a Hydrogen-based Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP) into an S80 class submarine. This marks the first installation of a third-generation AIP in a submarine. The event was attended by Spanish National Armament Director, Admiral Aniceto Rosique Nieto.

This technological advancement is a pivotal moment in the S-80 Programme, setting a new standard for shipbuilding in Spain. The AIP system will enable the Spanish Navy’s submarines to remain submerged for extended periods, surpassing the capabilities of conventional diesel-electric submarines. This innovative technology, a culmination of significant efforts by the national industry, positions Navantia as a global leader in submarine construction.

Navantia’s AIP System

Navantia‘s AIP system, branded as BEST (Bio-Ethanol Stealth Technology), is a cutting-edge energy production plant that allows the submarine’s batteries to recharge while submerged. By eliminating the need for frequent snorkel maneuvers, the submarine becomes less detectable and more secure. The system utilizes a bioethanol reforming process to generate hydrogen, which, combined with pure oxygen, powers a fuel cell to produce electricity.

Unlike previous AIP systems, Navantia’s third-generation technology does not require storing hydrogen onboard. Instead, it generates hydrogen on demand, enhancing the submarine’s tactical advantage, safety, and strategic autonomy. Additionally, the system contributes to crew safety and reduces operational personnel requirements.
