Navantia UK Finalizes Acquisition of Harland & Wolff, Securing Over 1,000 Jobs

Navantia UK Acquires Harland & Wolff: LONDON – Navantia UK announced on January 27, 2025, the completion of its acquisition of Harland & Wolff’s facilities. The acquisition encompasses sites in Belfast, Appledore, Methil, and Arnish, and is expected to safeguard more than 1,000 jobs. The move aims to bolster the UK’s capabilities in the defense, maritime, and clean energy sectors.

Under Navantia UK’s management, the four facilities will utilize expertise in shipbuilding, fabrication, and complex program management. This support will extend to the existing workforce and supply chain.

A key element of the acquisition is the continuation of the Fleet Solid Support (FSS) program. This program involves the construction of three ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, intended to support the UK Carrier Strike Group. Construction will take place at the Belfast and Appledore facilities, as well as Navantia’s shipyards in Spain. Navantia UK has indicated plans for further development of the yards to serve the defense, maritime, and green energy industries.

Navantia UK also acknowledged the support of the UK government throughout the acquisition process.

The transaction has received all necessary regulatory approvals. All Harland & Wolff employees have transferred to Navantia UK, retaining their existing terms and conditions of employment.

Navantia was advised on the transaction by Alantra, Clifford Chance, TLT, and KPMG, among others.

Spain’s state owned shipbuilder – Navantia S.A., S.M.E.

Navantia UK is a subsidiary of Navantia S.A., S.M.E., the Spanish state-owned shipbuilding and engineering company. Navantia has a history spanning over 300 years in naval shipbuilding. The company’s expertise includes the design and integration of high-tech systems, as well as lifecycle support services. Through its Navantia Seanergies division, the company is also involved in the development of offshore wind energy and other green energy technologies. Navantia employs approximately 4,000 people in Spain.

The FSS program is tasked with delivering three support ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

The acquired Harland & Wolff facilities are located in Belfast, Appledore, Methil, and Arnish.
