US approves $2 billion arms package for Taiwan: The United States has approved a significant arms sale to Taiwan, valued at approximately $1.988 billion, in a move aimed at bolstering the island nation’s defense capabilities against a backdrop of rising tensions with China. This marks the 17th arms sale authorized by the Biden administration to Taiwan and comes amidst increased Chinese military activity around the Taiwan Strait.

The centerpiece of the package is the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), estimated to cost $1.16 billion. This advanced system, which has seen successful deployment in Ukraine’s defense against Russia, will significantly enhance Taiwan’s air defense capabilities. The NASAMS boasts automated detection, fire control command, and intelligence integration capabilities, offering a robust shield against potential aerial threats.

The package also includes AN/TPS-77 and AN/TPS-78 radar turnkey systems, valued at $828 million. These ground-based, multi-mission radars will provide Taiwan with long-range air surveillance capabilities, enabling them to identify and track potential threats more effectively.

The move by the US is seen as a response to China’s growing assertiveness in the region. Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has not ruled out using military force to achieve reunification. Recent Chinese military exercises surrounding Taiwan have heightened tensions and raised concerns about a potential conflict.

Taiwan, a self-governing island with its own democratically elected government, has long maintained its right to self-defense. The Taiwanese Presidential Office expressed gratitude for the US’ support, emphasizing its alignment with the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances, which commit the US to providing Taiwan with means to defend itself.

The Taiwanese Ministry of National Defence (MND) echoed this sentiment, highlighting the new weapons’ crucial role in strengthening their defenses in the face of increased Chinese military activity. The MND specifically emphasized the NASAMS system’s effectiveness in Ukraine as a testament to its capability.

Following the DSCA‘s notification to the US Congress, a 30-day review period will commence. If Congress grants approval, a formal letter of offer will be issued to Taiwan, initiating negotiations for a final contract and delivery timeline.

This significant arms deal underscores the US commitment to Taiwan’s security and its determination to maintain a balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region. While tensions with China appear likely to persist, Taiwan’s enhanced defense capabilities will provide a stronger deterrent and contribute to regional stability.
