Kongsberg‘s NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) has established itself as a world leader in medium-range air defense solutions. Originally acquired by the Netherlands in 2006, NASAMS has played a vital role in the country’s ground-based air defense for nearly two decades. This latest acquisition signifies not only a continuation of that trust but also an expansion of the system’s capabilities within the Dutch arsenal.

NASAMS is known for its versatility, employing a mix of missiles that cater to both long-range and short-range threats. The system can utilize the AMRAAM-Extended Range missile for long-range engagements and the AIM-9X Sidewinder for closer-in defense. This flexibility allows the Netherlands to effectively counter a wide spectrum of aerial threats.

Complementing the long-range capabilities of NASAMS, the Netherlands will also be acquiring Kongsberg’s NOMADS (National Manoeuvre Air Defence System). This highly mobile system is specifically designed to offer short-range air defense protection for land forces operating in dynamic and contested environments.

NOMADS prioritizes mobility, featuring a configuration mounted on an armored mechanized vehicle. This allows the system to keep pace with land forces and provide air defense coverage where it’s needed most.

The system packs a punch despite its compact size. NOMADS includes two launch canisters for short-range missiles, a 3D radar for threat detection, and a KONGSBERG PROTECTOR remote weapon station for additional defensive capabilities. Importantly, NOMADS integrates seamlessly with NASAMS and other NATO systems, enabling coordinated and networked air defense operations across multiple platforms.

The combined acquisition of NASAMS and NOMADS signifies a significant leap forward in the Netherlands’ air defense capabilities. By integrating these two complementary systems, the Netherlands will build a robust and flexible air defense network capable of addressing a wide range of threats across various operational scenarios. While Kongsberg is currently collaborating with Dutch industry for the delivery of these systems, final contract details and official statements are expected later in 2024.
